The weight of an object is usually taken to be the force on the object due to gravity . It is equal to the object mass multiplied by the gravitational acceleration g:
P = m * g
Therefore the mass of an object can be obtained from a weight measurement which is nothing but a force measurement.
Weight sensors using strain gauges measure a material deformation under the load effect. This deformation is then converted by the strain gauge in electrical resistance variation.
A weight sensor must be made with a body on which the strain gauges will be installed on the area which is deformed, in the elastic domain of the body material. Usually it is a metal bar called test specimen that will be designed to deform and to support the load to be measured.
According to the weighing applications, the weight sensor may be loaded in bending, in tension, in compression or in cutting. The body test shape will change according to these various requests.
